Born to a Jewish family in Frankfurt, Loewi proved that nerves communicate chemically rather than only electrically — famously designing the decisive frog-heart experiment after it came to him in a dream, identifying acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter. He shared the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Henry Dale. After Austria's annexation in 1938 he was briefly imprisoned by the Nazis and forced to surrender his Nobel money before emigrating to the United States.
