Oscar Zariski is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Algebraic geometry; the Zariski topology
Born Ascher Zaritsky to a Jewish family in Kobrin, Zariski trained in Rome and emigrated to the United States, where he rebuilt algebraic geometry on rigorous algebraic foundations. The Zariski topology, Zariski's main theorem and his students shaped the entire modern field. He received the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1981.
