How & why
Gerstenhaber was an American mathematician at the University of Pennsylvania who founded algebraic deformation theory and introduced the Gerstenhaber algebra and bracket, structures now central to deformation quantization and quantum groups. His work was honored with the 2021 AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize. He was Jewish.
