Denn is a chemical engineer and rheologist, an authority on polymer processing and non-Newtonian flow, awarded the Society of Rheology's Bingham Medal in 1986. Raised in an observant Jewish family in New Jersey, he was active in his synagogue's youth congregation and led Hillel at Princeton. He held the Albert Einstein professorship at the City College of New York.
