Eugene Guth

Guth was a physicist who co-founded the statistical (kinetic) theory of rubber elasticity, explaining the entropic origin of the elastic force in randomly kinked polymer chains, and also contributed to nuclear and solid-state physics; he received the Bingham Medal for rheology in 1965. Trained in Vienna, he emigrated to the United States and worked at Notre Dame and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A Central European émigré scientist, he appears on rosters of Jewish scientists, though standard biographies focus on his physics.
