The son of a rabbi, Rabin fled Nazi Germany with his family, growing up in Mandatory Palestine and later Israel. With Dana Scott he introduced nondeterministic finite automata, and he went on to pioneer randomized (probabilistic) algorithms and cryptography, showing that controlled use of chance can make computation vastly more efficient. For this foundational work he shared the 1976 Turing Award. He is Jewish.
