Raised in a culturally Jewish family in New Jersey, Feigenbaum earned his PhD under Herbert Simon at Carnegie and became a founder of Stanford's computer science department. He built the pioneering knowledge-based systems DENDRAL and MYCIN, showing that encoding human expertise into rules could give computers practical reasoning power, which earned him the title 'father of expert systems.' For this work he shared the 1994 ACM Turing Award with Raj Reddy, and it helped launch the commercial artificial-intelligence industry.
