Perlis, an American Jewish computer scientist, helped design the ALGOL programming language and pioneered the academic study of programming. In 1966 he became the very first recipient of the ACM Turing Award, computing's highest honor, for his influence on advanced programming techniques and compiler construction. He founded early computer-science departments at Carnegie and Yale.
