Origins and early life
Meyer Habib was born in the twelfth arrondissement of Paris on 28 April 1961, into a Jewish family of Tunisian origin, and grew up in the nineteenth arrondissement, where he received a traditional Jewish education that has shaped his public life ever since. He studied at the Technion in Haifa, then made his career in industry and luxury goods, becoming deputy general manager of the watchmaker Citizen and a director of the Vendôme group in the jewellery trade.
Work and career
From the 1990s he was active in the Conseil représentatif des institutions juives de France, the CRIF, of which he became vice-president, and he stood for its presidency in 2010, losing the vote by 106 to 61. He also served as vice-president of the executive committee of the Jewish National Fund, the body founded in 1901 to buy and plant land in the Land of Israel. In 2013 he was elected deputy for the eighth constituency of French citizens living abroad, which covers Israel, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Malta, and he was returned in 2017 and 2022, then again at a by-election in 2023 after the previous result was annulled. He lost the seat at the elections of July 2024, closing eleven years in the National Assembly.
