Origins and early life
Gil Taïeb was born at Tunis on 20 July 1957 and died in Paris on 15 April 2024, at the age of sixty-six.
Work and career
He qualified as a dental surgeon in the 1980s and practised in Paris, but he is remembered above all for four decades given to Jewish communal and humanitarian work. In 1990 he founded the Association de soutien à Israël, which funded social programmes for disadvantaged children and families in Israel. Within the institutions of French Jewry he was spokesman of the Consistoire de Paris from 1997 to 2001 and its vice-president from 2001 to 2010, held office at the Fonds social juif unifié, the welfare and education body of French Jewry created in 1950, and served as vice-president of the CRIF, the representative council of French Jewish institutions.
Later years
He was known for taking humanitarian convoys and emergency aid to places far outside his own community, and after his death the Élysée called him a tutelary figure of interreligious dialogue who carried the Republic and its values at heart. He was married to Karen Taïeb, a Paris city councillor, and they had three children.
