Origins and early life
Ariel Goldmann was born at Bordeaux in 1963, into a family at the centre of French Jewish religious life: his father Alain Goldmann was chief rabbi of Paris from 1981 to 1994, and his mother Danielle is descended from Rabbi Henri Schilli, acting chief rabbi of France in the early 1950s.
Work and career
He was called to the Paris bar in 1989 and co-founded in 2001 the firm BGM Avocats, practising in commercial and financial criminal law. He acted in the contaminated blood proceedings and appeared as counsel for civil parties in the trial arising from the Toulouse murders of 2012, in which a gunman killed three children and a teacher at a Jewish school. Since April 2014 he has been president of the Fonds social juif unifié, the central welfare and education body of French Jewry created in 1950, and of the Fondation du judaïsme français; he had been vice-president of the CRIF from 2007 to 2014. He was promoted officer of the Legion of Honour in 2017 and commander of the Ordre national du Mérite in 2023.
