Origins and early life
Émile Abraham Touati was born at Tlemcen in Algeria on 19 February 1927, son of the chief rabbi Haïm Touati of Tlemcen and of Zohra Sultan, herself descended from great rabbis of Algeria; his great-grandfather was Rabbi Hayim Bliah and his brother became the chief rabbi Charles Touati.
Work and career
He came to France with the Jews of Algeria, and made his career in the ordinary French world: economic journalist at Le Monde, then advertising and marketing at Havas, and a teacher at CELSA, at the École nationale d'administration and at Sciences Po. He gave the rest of his time to the community: vice-president of the CRIF, and president of the Israelite Consistory of Paris from 1982 to 1990, the years in which the French Jewish community, doubled in size and changed in character by the arrival of the Jews of North Africa, had to build for them — community centres, schools, synagogues — and to accept that its liturgy, its cooking and its tone would not stay what they had been. A son of Tlemcen presiding in Paris was himself the sign of that shift. He died in Jerusalem on 14 October 1995.
