Max Noether was a German mathematician who was a leading figure in the nineteenth-century theory of algebraic curves and surfaces, and whose results, including the Noether residue theorem and 'Brill-Noether theory', shaped algebraic geometry. He was Jewish, born into a Jewish merchant family, and was the father of the mathematician Emmy Noether.
