Biography

Max Delvalle is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — The first Jewish president in Latin America — briefly President of Panama in 1967, having served as its vice-president.

How & why

Max Delvalle Maduro was vice-president of Panama and, for a few days in April 1967, its acting president — the first Jewish head of state in Latin American history. He noted the rarity himself: there were, he said at the time, only two Jewish presidents in the world, the president of Israel and himself. His nephew Eric Arturo Delvalle would hold the presidency twenty years later; both worshipped at Panama City's Kol Shearit Israel synagogue.
