Biography

Eric Arturo Delvalle is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — President of Panama (1985-88), nephew of Max Delvalle; deposed after trying to dismiss Manuel Noriega.

How & why

Nephew of Max Delvalle and, like him, a member of Panama City's Kol Shearit Israel synagogue, Eric Arturo Delvalle became President of Panama in 1985. In February 1988 he went on television to dismiss General Manuel Noriega, the country's de facto ruler — and was himself removed by the National Assembly within hours. He went into hiding, and the United States continued to recognise him as the legitimate president until 1989. He died in Miami in 2015.
