How & why

Born into a Jewish family in Breslau, Born built the theoretical physics school at Göttingen before the Nazi regime forced him, as a Jew, into exile in Britain. He provided the statistical (probabilistic) interpretation of the quantum wavefunction, showing that its squared magnitude gives the probability of finding a particle — a foundation of modern quantum mechanics — for which he received the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics. He also mentored a generation of leading physicists.
