Mark Azbel was a theoretical condensed-matter physicist who explained the electronic properties of metals, including cyclotron resonance and the Azbel–Kaner effect and work on electron energy spectra in magnetic fields. A Soviet Jew, he became a leader of the Moscow 'refusenik seminar' after being refused permission to emigrate to Israel; allowed out in 1977, he joined Tel Aviv University.
