Brigitte Sy

Origins and early life

Brigitte Sy was born in the tenth arrondissement of Paris on 26 January 1956; she is of Jewish origin, which her published biography states in as many words and on which her presence in this directory rests.

Work and career

She began acting in the cinema in 1979 with La Dérobade and worked steadily on screen and stage for three decades, often in the films of Philippe Garrel, with whom she had two children, the actors Louis and Esther Garrel. She spent years teaching theatre inside French prisons, and that work produced her own films: Les Mains libres in 2010, drawn from the encounter between a director and a prisoner, and then L'Astragale in 2015, adapted from Albertine Sarrazin's novel of escape and love written from inside a cell.

She had made a first short film in 2009, L'Endroit idéal, and returned to directing with Le bonheur est pour demain in 2023. Her work as a director keeps returning to confinement and to what people make of themselves inside it, and it is unusually free of the sentimentality that subject invites. She is also a screenwriter.
