Origins and early life
Agnès Esther Jaoui was born at Antony, south of Paris, on 19 October 1964, into a Jewish family from Tunisia: her parents left the country at independence and went in 1962 to found a kibbutz in Israel before settling in France.
Work and career
Her father Hubert Jaoui was an author and a specialist in creativity, her mother Gysa a psychotherapist, and she has described the household as communist, Zionist and entirely secular. With Jean-Pierre Bacri she formed the most successful writing partnership of modern French cinema, from the plays Cuisine et dépendances to the screenplays of Alain Resnais's Smoking / No Smoking and On connaît la chanson, and she has said that the couples they wrote came directly from the Jewish family arguments she grew up inside.
Recognition
Her first film as director, Le Goût des autres in 2000, took four Césars and an Oscar nomination for best foreign film, and Comme une image won the screenplay prize at Cannes in 2004. She has won seven Césars in all, more than any other woman in the history of the award, and received an honorary César in 2024. She is also a singer, with three albums drawn from the Sephardi, Latin American and Spanish repertoires.
