How & why

Boris Magasanik was a Ukrainian-born American microbiologist and biochemist, long a professor at MIT, who was a pioneer in understanding how bacteria regulate their metabolism, including nitrogen regulation, catabolite repression and two-component signaling. His research became foundational to molecular biology and gene regulation. Born to a Jewish family in Kharkiv, he fled with his family after the Russian civil war and later emigrated to the United States.
