Harry Rubin is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Virologist known for work on Rous sarcoma virus and cancer cell biology
The son of Russian Jewish immigrants in New York, Rubin trained as a veterinarian at Cornell before turning to virology in Renato Dulbecco's Caltech laboratory. In 1955 he showed that in a tumor infected with Rous sarcoma virus every cell can release the virus, opening the path to understanding how viruses and cellular genes cause cancer. As a professor at UC Berkeley he later studied growth control in transformed cells; his early insight helped launch modern cancer cell biology and shared the 1964 Lasker Award.
