A Polish Jew from Kraków, Gross fled Europe and continued his research in the United States, largely at the Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx. He demonstrated that viruses can transmit cancer (leukemia) in mammals — isolating the murine leukemia virus and later the polyoma virus — establishing viral oncology at a time when the idea met deep skepticism. He was Jewish.
