Liviu Librescu survived the Holocaust as a child in Romania, was later barred from research for refusing to renounce his Jewish faith and for asking to emigrate, and reached Israel in 1978 before joining Virginia Tech. He published widely on aeroelasticity and aerodynamics. On 16 April 2007 he held his classroom door shut against a gunman while his students climbed out of the windows; all but one survived, and he was shot through the door.
