Hoffmann, with Robert Woodward, formulated rules based on orbital symmetry that predict whether chemical reactions will proceed, sharing the 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. A survivor of the Holocaust who as a small child was hidden with his mother in an attic in Ukraine while most of his family was murdered, he later became a professor at Cornell University and a published poet and playwright. He was born into a Jewish family and emigrated to the United States after the war.
