Karola Ruth Siegel was born to a Jewish family in Germany and taken at ten on a Kindertransport to Switzerland; her parents were murdered in the Holocaust. She went to Mandatory Palestine, trained as a sniper in the Haganah and was seriously wounded in 1948, then studied in Paris and New York. From 1980 her broadcast Sexually Speaking, and the books and programmes that followed, made accurate, unembarrassed sex education ordinary in American homes — and in the 1980s she was among the first broadcasters to talk plainly about AIDS.
