Jack Liberman and his brother Chaim were Jewish migrants who reached Australia after the Second World War with nothing. Jack built the family's first fortune in commercial property, hosiery and forklifts, and when he died in 1997 the business passed to his sons. Boris Liberman runs JGL Investments, which has since spread into biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and venture capital, including a fund of about $140 million aimed at Israeli technology, and the family is among Melbourne's largest philanthropic givers.
