How & why

Joseph Safra was born in Beirut in 1938 into a Jewish banking family originally from Aleppo, whose business dates to Ottoman times. The family moved to Brazil in 1952, and he built Banco Safra into one of the country's largest private banks, adding Safra National Bank of New York and J. Safra Sarasin in Switzerland. He founded the Beit Yaacov Jewish school in Beirut in 2001, and at his death in 2020 was described as the richest banker in the world.
