Biography

Lev Shnirelman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Number theory; Shnirelman density and additive bases

How & why

Shnirelman, a Soviet Jewish mathematician regarded as a prodigy, made lasting contributions to number theory and topology despite dying at only 33. He introduced 'Shnirelman density' and used it to prove that every natural number can be written as a sum of a bounded number of primes, an early result toward Goldbach's conjecture. With Lazar Lyusternik he also developed a variational method that resolved a classic problem on closed geodesics.
