Messiah was a French theoretical physicist best known for his two-volume 'Quantum Mechanics,' one of the most widely used graduate textbooks of the twentieth century, translated into many languages. Born into a French Jewish family, he joined the Free French Forces during the Second World War before pursuing a career in nuclear and particle physics at the French Atomic Energy Commission and in academia. His treatise shaped how generations of physicists learned the subject.
