A German philosopher of Jewish descent and a descendant of Moses Mendelssohn, Nelson revived the critical philosophy of Kant and Jakob Fries and founded the Göttingen neo-Friesian school. He developed the Socratic method of teaching and wrote extensively on ethics, logic, and the theory of knowledge. He also founded political and educational reform movements before his early death at 45.
