Ferdinand Lassalle was a German-Jewish political philosopher, jurist and socialist who in 1863 founded the General German Workers' Association, the first mass working-class party in Germany and a direct ancestor of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Born into a Jewish merchant family in Breslau, he championed state-aided producer cooperatives and universal suffrage. He died at 39 from wounds in a duel, but his organizing made him a father of German social democracy.
