Leonard Mlodinow was born in Chicago to Jewish parents who were both Holocaust survivors; his father had led the Jewish resistance in Częstochowa and spent more than a year in Buchenwald. A theoretical physicist working on quantum field theory and chaos, he wrote for Star Trek: The Next Generation, then became one of the most widely read explainers of physics, writing The Drunkard's Walk on randomness and, with Stephen Hawking, A Briefer History of Time and The Grand Design.
