Kurt Gottfried

Gottfried was a theoretical physicist who made lasting contributions to quantum mechanics and particle theory, and whose widely used textbook on quantum mechanics trained generations of students. Born into a Jewish family in Vienna, he escaped Nazi persecution as a child, emigrating to Canada in 1939. He later co-founded the Union of Concerned Scientists and became a prominent voice on arms control and the social responsibility of science.
