Alexander Gelfond was a Soviet mathematician who founded key techniques in the theory of transcendental numbers. In 1934 he proved Gelfond's theorem, resolving Hilbert's seventh problem by showing that a^b is transcendental when a is algebraic (not 0 or 1) and b is an irrational algebraic number. He is listed among Jewish figures in mathematics.
