Jules Sitruk

Origins and early life

Jules Sitruk was born at Les Lilas, on the edge of Paris, on 16 April 1990.

Work and career

He is the nephew of Joseph Sitruk, chief rabbi of France from 1988 to 2008, and a distant cousin of the actor Olivier Sitruk, whose biography states that the family is a Tunisian Jewish one; the route by which he appears here is that documented family, not a surname. His father Claude Sitruk led the band Les Costars and later produced BB Brunes; his mother Jeanne is a designer. He began acting at eight, after a casting notice seen at his hairdresser's, and made his debut in 2000 in the television series Sans famille.

In 2002 Gérard Jugnot cast him as Simon Bernstein in Monsieur Batignole, a Jewish child hidden by a butcher in occupied Paris, and the following year he carried Moi César, 10 ans et demi, 1m39 in the title role; he was for a few years the best-known child actor in France. In 2013 he played Joseph in Le Fils de l'autre, Lorraine Lévy's film about an Israeli and a Palestinian baby switched at birth, a part in which the whole question of who belongs to which people is put to a young man. He has since worked in the theatre and in independent cinema.
