How & why

Origins and early life

Olivier Sitruk was born at Nice on 25 December 1970, into a Tunisian Jewish family, as his published biography says in as many words; he is the nephew of Joseph Sitruk, chief rabbi of France from 1988 to 2008, and a distant cousin of the actor Jules Sitruk. He began at the conservatoire of Nice at sixteen, went on to Studio 34 from 1988 to 1990 and graduated from the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique in Paris in 1997.

Work and career

Bertrand Tavernier gave him his first important part in L'Appât in 1994, a cold film about three young people who kill for money, and he worked afterwards steadily in French cinema and television, and above all on stage, where he has spent most of his career. French audiences know him from popular series and from the jury of La France a un incroyable talent in 2014. In 2024 he joined the board of the Adami, the body that administers the rights of performing artists and musicians in France, which is the sort of unglamorous work by which actors defend the conditions of their trade. His family came from the Jewish community of Tunis that left for France in the 1960s.
