Origins and early life
Tomer Sisley was born Tomer Gazit in West Berlin on 14 August 1974 to two Israeli Jewish researchers in dermatology; his paternal grandparents were Belarusian and Lithuanian Jews, his maternal grandparents Yemenite Jews, and he holds both French and Israeli nationality. He was brought to France as a child and grew up between the two countries and languages.
Work and career
He began in stand-up in the 1990s, one of the first in France to work the American one-man-show form, and his solo shows filled Parisian theatres before the cinema took him seriously. Jérôme Salle cast him as Largo Winch in 2008 and again in 2011, the billionaire adventurer of the Belgian comic strip, a physical part he trained hard for and which made him a leading man. From 2018 to 2023 he played the forensic pathologist Raphaël Balthazar in the series Balthazar, one of the most watched French dramas of its years and sold to some sixty countries.
He has spoken publicly against antisemitism and about his attachment to Israel, and he has continued to alternate comedy, action and stage work.
