Judah Maccabee (Yehuda HaMakabi) was the Jewish priest and general who led the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire and its suppression of Judaism. In 164 BCE he recaptured Jerusalem and rededicated the desecrated Temple, an event commemorated ever since by the festival of Hanukkah. He fell in battle at Elasa in 160 BCE, and his family, the Hasmoneans, went on to establish an independent Jewish state.
