Judah Maccabee is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Commander of the Maccabean revolt who retook Jerusalem and rededicated the Temple in 164 BCE.
Judah, third son of Mattathias, took command of the Jewish revolt in 166 BCE and led it for six years against the far larger armies of the Seleucid empire under Antiochus IV and his successors. Using mobile, hill-country tactics he won engagements at Beth Horon, Emmaus and Adasa, retook Jerusalem and rededicated the Temple on 25 Kislev 164 BCE, the event commemorated by Hanukkah. He fell in battle at Elasa in 160 BCE.
His campaign secured the survival of Jewish religious practice at a moment when it had been banned outright, and he is documented by 1 and 2 Maccabees and by Flavius Josephus.
