Lebowitz, a Jew born in Carpathian Ruthenia, survived Auschwitz as a teenager, lost his parents in the Holocaust, and rebuilt his life in the United States. He became a leading mathematical physicist at Rutgers, known for rigorous results in statistical mechanics — phase transitions, the foundations of nonequilibrium theory — and for editing the field's flagship journal. He is also a lifelong champion of scientists' human rights.
