How & why

Jerry Robinson was an American comic-book artist who, as a teenage assistant on Batman in 1940, is widely credited with co-creating the Joker and the character Robin. In later life he became a leading advocate for creators' rights, championing recognition for Superman's originators. He was Jewish, the son of Benjamin Robinson, a Jewish immigrant who had fled antisemitism in Russia.
