Jeffrey Goldstone

Goldstone, from a Jewish family in England, is a theoretical physicist at Cambridge and later MIT. He formulated Goldstone's theorem, which shows that whenever a continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken, massless particles (Goldstone bosons) must appear — a principle at the heart of particle physics and the Higgs mechanism. He also contributed the Goldstone-diagram technique in many-body theory.
