How & why

Migdal was a Soviet theoretical physicist equally at home in nuclear, particle and condensed-matter physics. He is remembered for Migdal's theorem on electron–phonon interactions and for his part in the Landau–Pomeranchuk–Migdal effect describing reduced radiation at high energies. He is documented as being of Jewish descent and belonged to the Soviet school of theoretical physics before spending his final years in the United States.
