Georgy Flerov's mother was Jewish; his grandfather had been a Russian Orthodox priest. With Konstantin Petrzhak he discovered the spontaneous fission of uranium in 1940, and in 1942, noticing that papers on fission had vanished from Western journals, he wrote to Stalin to warn that an atomic programme must be under way abroad — the letter that started the Soviet project. He founded the Joint Institute's Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at Dubna, where element 114, flerovium, was made and named for him.
