Biography

Jean-Bernard Lévy is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Ran three of France's largest groups in succession — Vivendi, Thales and EDF — and led EDF through the relaunch of French nuclear power.

How & why

Origins and early life

Jean-Bernard Lévy was born in Suresnes on 18 March 1955 to Claude Lévy, a doctor, and Monique Herzog, a teacher; the family came from Lorraine.

Work and career

His route into this directory is descent, and it rests on a single named source: the French magazine Capital, which reports that his father Claude was subjected to the antisemitic laws of Vichy. Those laws defined who was a Jew, and a man they caught was one — the same reasoning by which the Law of Return was drawn wider than any religious test. He went from the École polytechnique to France Télécom, then to ministerial cabinets and Matra Marconi Space, and then ran three of France's largest groups in succession: Vivendi from 2005 to 2012, rebuilding it after the Messier years; Thales from 2012 to 2014; and EDF from 2014 to 2022, through the relaunch of French nuclear power and the fight over whether the utility would be broken up. Officier de la Légion d'honneur.
