Ernesto Koplowitz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — German-Jewish engineer who fled Nazism to Spain and built Construcciones y Contratas, the firm that became FCC, one of Spain's largest construction and services groups.
Ernesto Koplowitz Sternberg — Ernst — was born in 1908 in Gleiwitz, in the coal country of Upper Silesia, then German. He trained as an engineer, and as life closed in on Jews in Germany he left, moving through Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Turkey and Morocco before settling in Spain, permanently from the early 1940s. He learned Spanish, worked for AEG in Valencia and then Madrid, and in 1952 bought a small builder called Construcciones y Reparaciones, which he renamed Construcciones y Contratas.
It merged in 1992 with Fomento de Obras y Construcciones, of Barcelona, to form FCC — today one of Spain's largest construction and services groups, which his daughters Esther and Alicia went on to lead. He died in 1962, aged fifty-four, after a riding accident in Madrid.
