In 1956, with Deborah Doniach and Peter Campbell, he discovered thyroglobulin autoantibodies in Hashimoto's thyroiditis — the first clear demonstration that the immune system can attack the body's own tissues. This launched the modern understanding of autoimmune disease, and his textbook Essential Immunology trained generations of doctors worldwide.
