Biography

Ivan Roitt is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Immunologist who helped establish autoimmunity and authored a leading immunology textbook.

How & why

Roitt, a British immunologist and one of Britain's documented Jewish scientists, studied at Oxford and headed the immunology department at University College London. In 1956, with Deborah Doniach and Peter Campbell, he discovered thyroglobulin autoantibodies in Hashimoto's thyroiditis — the first clear demonstration that the immune system can attack the body's own tissues. This launched the modern understanding of autoimmune disease, and his textbook Essential Immunology trained generations of doctors worldwide.
