Israel Simon Kleiner was an American physiological chemist whose experiments at the Rockefeller Institute between 1915 and 1919 demonstrated that a pancreatic substance lowered blood sugar, presaging the discovery of insulin, and he suggested it could be isolated for therapy. He later led the biochemistry department at New York Medical College. He was Jewish.
