Georg Ludwig Zülzer was a German physician whose pancreatic-extract experiments anticipated the discovery of insulin. Between 1906 and 1908 he treated diabetic patients with a preparation he called Acomatol, temporarily lowering blood sugar and even reversing diabetic coma, and he patented it over a decade before Banting and Best's purified insulin. He was of Jewish ancestry and, after the Nazis took power, emigrated to New York.
