Hugo Gernsback was born Hugo Gernsbacher in Luxembourg to a Jewish family, and emigrated to the United States in 1904 as an inventor and radio pioneer. In 1926 he founded Amazing Stories, the first magazine given over entirely to what he called 'scientifiction' and then science fiction — the act that turned scattered stories into a genre with a name, a readership and a community of writers. Science fiction's highest honour, the Hugo Award, carries his name.
