How & why

Alexander Korda was born Sándor László Kellner into a Jewish family in Pusztatúrpásztó, in Austria-Hungary. He began in Hungarian cinema, worked in Austria and Germany during the silent era, spent a first stretch in Hollywood from 1926, and from 1930 made Britain his ground. London Films, which he founded in 1932, gave the country a studio that could answer Hollywood: The Private Life of Henry VIII, Things to Come, The Thief of Bagdad, The Third Man.

In 1942 he became the first film-maker ever knighted. His brothers Zoltán directed and Vincent designed; the three of them made much of British cinema between them.
